Spates Construction Inc. is a family business that was started in 1974 by Frank and Jeannette Spates. It remains a family owned company to this day, when, in 2001, they turned the reigns over to their sons Grant, Dana and Lee. For the past 45 years, Spates Construction has concentrated on commercial construction. They build schools, churches, office buildings, residences, retail stores, manufacturing plants and recreational centers. These projects take them to sites in both Vermont and New Hampshire. While specializing in all of these various forms of construction, Spates prides itself on working closely with owners and architects with professionalism, constructive suggestions, integrity and candor.
First son, Grant, started working for the company in 1975. Brothers Dana and Lee joined in 1979 and 1983, respectively. These three sons, with long time employees Glenn Bonin (38 yrs), Mark Lewis (33 yrs) and Jody Alix (34 yrs), make up their core of construction superintendents. They all share a common past having graduated from North Country Union High School and beginning their careers at Spates. They started as laborers, became carpenters and evolved into job superintendents.
Robert "Oscar" Thayer (31 yrs) and Amy Hilliker work the office with Grant. They are responsible for purchasing, payroll, construction management, subcontracts, job costing, billing, and insurance processes. These are all administrative tasks necessary to keep projects moving in the right direction.
With this seasoned team of supers and administrators, Spates offers construction management, design-build, computer-aided drafting and estimating services. They, also, have the in-house knowledge and resources to help customers through the mire of various permitting processes. They can obtain Act 250, Labor & Industry and local permits for their clients’ projects; a big plus when it comes to preparing for a multitude of differing projects.
With the strength of their core management team, and leadership from experienced carpenters, Spates is able to hire an additional 15 - 20 carpenters and laborers needed during the peak of the construction season.
Spates Construction, in 2015 won its third 5x5x5 Growth Award to accompany their 2007 & 2011 awards. It was as exciting as it was challenging to manage. Often times, rapid, unmanaged growth can take a company under. This successfully managed growth could only be achieved by having an experienced and dedicated team in place. The philosophy is to challenge the team, then acknowledge and reward them. For, as much as bricks and mortar outline a building, it’s the people that define a company.
Along with Spates traditional construction services are their dealership offerings from Star Building Systems. They have been a Star Buildings dealership since 1975. As well as doing great wood work, the Spates crews are experienced in erecting Star’s pre-engineered steel buildings.
Earlier in 2019 Spates completed renovations to BFA Fairfax School. Spates also completed installing new windows at Richford High School, renovations at Maplehill School in Plainfield, VT as well as erecting a new Barn for the Maplehill School.
Spates is currently working on renovations at Hardwick Bridgman Reservoir for the Town of Hardwick., as well as an Addition to Butternut Sugarhouse in Johnson.
Additional projects of note are the Border Patrol Station in Derby, VT, US Fish & Wildlife Visitor Station in the Nulhegan Basin, Brunswick, VT, co-generation plant for North Country Hospital, and the Southern Vermont Recreation Center in Springfield. The Springfield project contains a swimming pool, aqua-therapy pool, wading pool, steam room, walking track and fitness center. And, you will find guests enjoying continuing upgrades to the Villmark sauna units at Smuggler’s Notch in Jeffersonville.
Spates Construction would like thank their many customers throughout the years for entrusting them with their building projects. With over 133 years of combined construction field experience, the Spates team knows construction from trenches to trusses and levels to lasers. And, you can always be confident that two well known Vermont traditions go into every Spates project--craftsmanship and pride. Contact their office for your building needs. They’d like to talk to you.
