Vermont Works Management Company, LLC announced today it is welcoming Skip Wyer, a private equity investment specialist, as a partner in the independent alternative investment firm. “Skip’s interest and expertise lies in both private equity investment in agriculture and agriculture technology, or agtech,” said Robert Zulkoski, chairman and managing partner at Vermont Works, adding “This makes him a strong addition to our team.”
“Agriculture and agtech are two investment opportunity sets that are abundant in Vermont, and part of Vermont’s unique DNA,” Zulkoski said.
Wyer’s arrival is especially timely as Vermont Works is in the process of applying to the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Business Investment Program for a license given to newly formed venture capital organizations to help meet the equity capital investment needs in rural communities. The USDA program licenses funds to invest in enterprises that will create growth and job opportunities in rural areas, with an emphasis on smaller enterprises. These licensed funds can then raise capital from Farm Credit System banks and associations. Vermont Works’ application has received letters of support from all three members of Vermont’s Congressional delegation.
A 1983 Middlebury College graduate, Wyer spent the bulk of his career in Boston and Minneapolis, working in financial services at such companies as Cargill and Värde Partners before founding his own entrepreneurial investment company, Linea Capital, in Minneapolis.
“I’m excited to be joining the Vermont Works team,’’ Wyer said. “A lot of my work has been focused on supporting sustainable agriculture, specialty food production and technologies that improve the health and well-being of the people, animals and environment affected by these activities. Vermont is obviously at the forefront in these markets and I hope to add value where needed in those areas.”
