Vermont Business Magazine Pier 1 Imports opened its first corporate-owned store in Vermont with much fanfare in South Burlington. The store, which officially opened on Tuesday, completes Pier 1 Imports’ retail presence in each of the 50 states across the country. Customers were lined up waiting to get in as an A-list of local dignitaries opened the two-store shop next to the also brand new Trader Joe's off Dorset Street. The event included the presentation of a donation of $2,500 from Pier 1 to representatives of Burlington-based nonprofit Women Helping Battered Women.

“We are excited to bring this new Pier 1 Imports to South Burlington and look forward to sharing our unique shopping experience with the residents of Vermont,” said Sharon M Leite, Executive Vice President of Sales and Customer Experience at Pier 1 Imports. “With the opening of a store in our fiftieth state, Pier 1 Imports officially offers endless decorating, entertaining and gifting possibilities from coast to coast.”

The Pier 1 Imports store in South Burlington will feature the new store concept and boasts a total retail square footage of approximately 10,810 square feet. Long-time Williston resident Jeffery Fucci, a graduate of St. Michael’s College with extensive retail management experience at stores in the Burlington area, will manage the new store, leading a team of approximately 35-40 associates. Associate hours fluctuate based on the needs of the business and the season.

Local business and political leaders included Jim Condos, Secretary of State (and former South Burlington city councilor); Tom Torti, President, Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce; Kevin Dorn, City Manager, City of South Burlington; Pam Mackenzie, Chair, South Burlington City Council; Lisa Ventriss, President, Vermont Business Roundtable; Lisa Gosselin, Vermont Economic Development Commissioner; and State Senators Ginny Lyons (D-Chittenden) and Michael Sirotkin (D-Chittenden).

Pier 1 Imports also gave away to the first 50 shoppers in line for the store opening a $50 Pier 1 Imports gift card. In addition, the first 250 guests received a free Pier 1 Imports reusable bag, iconic Pier 1 Imports backscratcher and sweets from Cookies For Good. Pier 1 previously had franchise outlets in Burlington, but currently this is the only Pier 1 Imports store in Vermont.

New Store Concept

Pier 1 Imports was proud to introduce its new store concept in fall 2011. The new store design is a natural evolution of the Pier 1 Imports experience that utilizes a new interior finish-out, including natural-colored floor tiles, rustic ceiling elements, enhanced store lighting and lit shelving units lining the walls, all of which help customers visualize the end-use of the products within their own home. The new look is complemented by the use of “open stock” merchandising, designed to enhance the shopping environment by giving customers the opportunity to see, feel and interact with the product. The exterior design features a signature bamboo door with rustic metal door handles that will mark the entrance to Pier 1 Imports’ unique shopping experience. The features of the new store will allow easier navigation, all while maintaining the “treasure hunt” feel and continuing to make Pier 1 Imports a great place for discovery and spending time browsing.
