Vermont Business Magazine Hunger Free Vermont has been awarded a $30,000 grant from Newman’s Own Foundation, the independent foundation created by the late actor and philanthropist, Paul Newman. Newman’s Own Foundation made the award for the second year in a row to Hunger Free Vermont as part of a broader commitment to support programs that increase access to fresh food and nutrition education in underserved communities. This funding will help Hunger Free Vermont to offer nutrition education in communities across Vermont—teaching Vermont youth and adults how to shop for and prepare nutritious meals on small budgets, as well as training child care providers so that our youngest children get the crucial nutrition they need for their early childhood development.

“We are honored and incredibly grateful to receive such significant support from Newman’s Own Foundation for our early childhood nutrition work and our cooking and nutrition education program which have both been serving Vermonters for nearly two decades,” remarks Marissa Parisi, Hunger Free Vermont’s executive director. “Many of our neighbors struggle to make ends meet to afford healthy food for themselves and their families. Helping kids get good nutrition in childcare relieves the family food budget and can often extend nutrition education into the home when kids share what they have tasted or learned about healthy food. Plus, The Learning Kitchen program directly teaches skills for eating well on a small budget.”

“As the board chair of Hunger Free Vermont and an employee of Cabot Creamery, I am thrilled to see this partnership with leaders in their respective businesses,” remarks Amy Levine, Hunger Free Vermont’s board chair. “Newman’s Own Foundation is a leading example of how philanthropy and food production can go hand-in-hand with Hunger Free Vermont’s model for tackling food insecurity. Thank you to Newman’s Own Foundation for investing in Hunger Free Vermont.”

Hunger Free Vermont is dedicated to ending the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for all Vermonters.

Newman’s Own Foundation turns all net profits and royalties from the sale of Newman’s Own products into charitable donations. To date, Paul Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation have given over $495 million to thousands of charities around the world.

Hunger Free Vermont is a statewide nonprofit organization that works with state agencies and community groups to end the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for all Vermonters. Since 1993 Hunger Free Vermont’s outreach programs have substantially enhanced Vermont’s nutrition safety net and increased access to nutritious foods.
