Happy Down Syndrome Awareness Month!
For ten years, the Champlain Valley Down Syndrome Group (CVDSG) has recognized October as Down Syndrome Awareness Month with our Buddy Walk® at Battery Park in Burlington. The annual event brought together hundreds in the community for a one-mile walk through the downtown streets to raise awareness of Down syndrome.
This year, to ensure the safety of our families and the community, the Champlain Valley Down Syndrome Group, like so many other organizations, made the decision to cancel this year’s event.
Instead, families will hold neighborhood Buddy Walks to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
Many will also place “Be A Buddy!” signs on their lawns to support our friends and family members with Down Syndrome.
The Buddy Walk was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.
Today, there are over 250 Buddy Walk® events in the US and are organized locally by parent support groups, schools and other organizations.
We believe people with Down syndrome do not have special needs; they have the same needs as others. Access to quality educational programs, a stimulating home environment, good medical care and positive support from family, friends and the community at large enable people with Down syndrome to enhance their quality of life and realize their life aspirations.
Children and adults with Down syndrome participate in their communities in meaningful ways which allows them to showcase their gifts and abilities. Down Syndrome Awareness Month helps to shine the spotlight on the many ways people with Down syndrome enrich our homes, schools and communities.
The Champlain Valley Down Syndrome Group would like to thank our sponsors Dore & Whittier Architects, People’s United Community Foundation and CCS Constructors, Inc. whose financial support provides funding for CVDSG programs and events.
So please join us in celebrating friends and family and “Be A Buddy!” during Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
