Report shows affordable housing shortage in Lamoille County
“As communities grow and change, it is important that we keep housing data and trends fresh and up to date,” says Lamoille Housing Partnership’s Executive Director, Jim Lovinsky. “It’s critical to have this information available to decision-makers on all levels and sectors of the community, whether municipal, private sector, health care, and non-profit, so that we can better meet the needs of our friends and neighbors who live and work in our area.”
In 2018, LHP, LCPC, and SLT worked with Doug Kennedy Advisors to survey Lamoille County and the Town of Hardwick. Doug Kennedy Advisors has more than 30 years of expertise in research, analyses and strategies within residential and commercial development. The end result was the “Lamoille Housing Study & Needs Assessment,” a comprehensive report illustrating the housing landscape of the region. The study examined a wide variety of factors that give scope to Lamoille Valley’s residential development, such as the region’s economy, characteristics of housing stock, housing market trends, regional demographics, analysis of supply and demand, and perspectives from towns and employers.
“The housing study has valuable recommendations that can jumpstart a discussion about steps that municipalities can undertake to both help create housing opportunities, and also address housing challenges,” says Regional Planner Lea Kilvàdyovà from the Lamoille County Planning Commission, the organization that works with local municipalities to develop housing profiles for municipal plans.
“The land trust partnered on this study as a step toward better understanding where the opportunities are for meeting our community’s housing needs while also making sure people have easy and healthy access to trails, rivers, local farms, and other conserved outdoor spaces,” says Stowe Land Trust Executive Director, Kristen Sharpless. “Housing and land conservation are often seen as competing needs in our area even though they can go hand-in-hand when well-planned.”
The Housing Needs Summit will feature a data presentation and a panelist discussion. Doug Kennedy, who created the report, will present the data portion. The panel will include professionals from the business, education, healthcare, development, human service and affordable housing development sectors, as well as representatives from local municipalities and State government. The panel discussion will focus on each individuals’ takeaway from the study, perspectives on the findings through the lens of the panelist’s work, as well as the challenges and opportunities of residential development in the Lamoille Valley.
