Two young men, graduates of Saint Michael's College, are progressing through the stages of entering the priesthood with the Society of St. Edmund, the order of priests and brothers that founded Saint Michael's College.
Jonathan Wheeler, a resident of South Burlington, will be taking his first vows in the Society of Saint Edmund on August 15, 2012, at Saint Anne’s Shrine in Isle La Motte, Vermont. Jonathan, a 2010 graduate of Saint Michael's College, is the son of Mark and Jennifer Wheeler of Lancaster, Mass. During the coming academic year, Jonathan will be attending Boston College studying theology. He will be joining Brothers Joe Kwiatkowski (SMC 2009), and Lino Oropeza from the Edmundite parish in Caracas. Venezuela.
Michael Carter, a 2012 graduate of Saint Michael’s College, with a degree in religious studies, the son of Kathleen and Richard Carter of Burlington, will be beginning his novitiate in August at the Society of St. Edmund House of Formation in South Burlington.
The Society of St. Edmund, called Edmundites, were founded as a small missionary band in 19th century France. They have always served where they are needed. Whether it was founding one of the first Catholic colleges in Vermont, Saint Michael's College, working for Civil Rights in Selma, Alabama, bringing Christ’s charity to the needy of New Orleans, or serving parishes in the barrios of Caracas, Venezuela, Edmundites remain a small band of priests and brothers with a missionary zeal to serve those most in need.
Their presence has been central to the formation and development of Saint Michael's College, as a Catholic institution committed to developing students who believe in social justice, service, and hospitality.
