Vermont Lt. Governor Phil Scott is serving on the leadership committee of the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA). The NLGA is a professional association enabling regional and nationwide policy discussion and progress at the state level. “Through NLGA’s bipartisan nature, the priorities of lieutenant governors and their states and territories are united – not divided,” said NLGA Director Julia Hurst.
Lt. Gov. Scott is serving as the Eastern Region-At-Large Republican of the NLGA Executive Committee. “The lieutenant governor was nominated to this position by a bipartisan group of his peers,” said Hurst. “His unanimous election among officials of both parties from every region of the country speaks to the high regard he is held in among his peers.”
Earlier this year, the NLGA unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution cosponsored by Lt. Gov. Scott and Lt. Governor Ralph Northam, D-Va., calling on Congress to “develop a shared, long-term vision for surface transportation.” Back in Vermont, U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, Transportation Secretary Brian Searles, and other state officials joined the call. Just this week, Congress passed a short-term fix that will allow road projects to continue through May of 2015, a move Lt. Gov. Scott applauds, though he still says a long-term fix is needed.
“I’m glad to see that Congress was able to work together in a bipartisan manner to partially address this crucial problem, just as the NLGA did when considering the resolution,” Lt. Gov. Scott said. “The NLGA is a group that doesn’t put party above policy, and I’m honored to receive their unanimous support, both in my election to the Executive Committee and in passing the resolution in March.”
The NLGA provides research and best practices exchange to the officeholders first in the line of succession to the governor in all 50 states and the U.S. territories. The committee meets about three times a year and is responsible for charting the course of policy issues and national impact to be pursued by the nation’s second-highest state and territorial officeholders. In addition to its specific duties, the committee will also address issues of mutual concern to all members.
