Governor Shumlin declares September 22-23 as 'Vermont Plug in Weekend'
Car dealerships across Vermont are partnering with Drive Electric Vermont to celebrate National Plug In Day by encouraging Vermonters to learn more about the electric vehicles in their showrooms. To help promote the celebration, Governor Shumlin has officially declared that September 22 and 23, 2012 will be Vermont Plug In Weekend.
The Vermont Plug In Weekend events, which are being promoted by Drive Electric Vermont at dealer showrooms throughout the state, will provide an opportunity for members of the public to learn about and test drive electric vehicles that are currently available for purchase. Safe, powerful, and widely available, these vehicles can plug into any conventional electric outlet. They are also increasingly affordable to purchase and operate: driving an electric vehicle costs 2-4 cents per mile, while a gas-fueled vehicle costs 10-15 cents per mile.
Karen Glitman, Director of Transportation Efficiency at the Vermont Energy Investment Corporation – the lead partner of Drive Electric Vermont - said that electric vehicles are already registered in more than 50 Vermont communities. “The goal of Vermont Plug In Weekend is to partner with local car dealerships to get the word out about the current availability of electric vehicles in Vermont, and encourage consumers to explore them as an option,” she said. “Transitioning our transportation system away from its dependence on gasoline will have an enormous impact on our economy - helping to keep more dollars local, rather than sending them overseas.”
The following car dealerships will hold Vermont Plug In Weekend events during open hours on September 22 and 23:
- 802 Toyota, Berlin
- Alderman’s Chevrolet, Rutland
- Burlington Mitsubishi, South Burlington
- Freedom Nissan, South Burlington
- Hand Chevrolet, Manchester
- Heritage Toyota, South Burlington
- McMahon Chevrolet, Morrisville
- White River Toyota, White River Junction
