Norris Hoyt, a longtime state representative from Norwich and a former tax commissioner, died Sunday at age 76.
Hoyt was born in Chicago and moved to Vermont in 1969 to become deputy commissioner in the Department of Taxes.
He was elected to the House in 1974 and served five terms before becoming tax commissioner in 1985.
Hoyt, known as Norrie, and his wife, Kathleen, were the only couple to have been married in the Vermont Statehouse, Hoyt’s obituary said. Kathleen Hoyt also served in the administrations of Govs. Madeleine Kunin and Howard Dean.
He is survived by his wife and two sons. A celebration of Hoyt’s life will be held at his home in Norwich on Sept. 14.
