DEW Construction Recognized As Red Cross Life Share Sponsor

The American Red Cross Blood Services, Northern New England Region
recently recognized D.E.W Construction of Williston as a Life Share
sponsor. The Red Cross Life Share program acknowledges sponsors who achieve
excellence in conducting successful blood drives based on donor
participation. It is through the support of dedicated sponsors, such as
D.E.W Construction, that blood donors have the opportunity to help save
lives.
D.E.W Construction opened for business in 1997 with a mission of building
excellence through their people and services. One of their nine key
initiatives is a commitment to the community. On July 9, D.E.W Construction
hosted a Red Cross blood drive for the first time. The drive was limited to
employees, friends and family and achieved close to twice the number of
donors expected.
The blood drive came about as a result of a suggestion to the company’s
Wellness Committee. Members of the Wellness Committee promoted the blood
drive, volunteered during the drive and contributed healthy refreshments,
including that week’s portion of their Community Supported Agriculture
share. The Wellness Committee focuses on ways to keep employees healthy
through good nutrition, exercise and other lifestyle choices. The blood
drive allowed employees to share their good health with patients in need.
A second blood drive is planned for Friday, October 22 from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. at the company’s Blair Park location. This blood drive is open to
the public and D.E.W Construction welcomes Williston residents and
commuters employed by area businesses to attend and help keep the community
blood supply plentiful.
According to the American Red Cross, blood is perishable and has a shelf
life of only 42 days. It is the blood donated today that helps save lives
tomorrow. Blood is used to treat a wide variety of life-threatening
conditions, including surgery, cancer, premature births and many others.
Blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh 110 pounds or more
and be in good health. Donors 18 years and younger may need to meet
additional height and weight requirements.
The American Red Cross encourages businesses, associations, schools and
community groups to become blood drive sponsors. Those interested may call
the American Red Cross Blood Services, Northern New England Region at
658-6400 or 1-800-843-3500.
