AIV Energy Conference and Gubernatoral Address
WHAT: Conference on Major Costs and Opportunities In Vermont's Energy Future
and Address by Governor Jim Douglas
WHEN: October 6, 8:30 am to 1:30 pm
WHERE: Capitol Plaza Hotel, Montpelier
Associated Industries of Vermont convenes its 89th Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 6 at the Capitol
Plaza Hotel in Montpelier. AIV's annual meeting is the state's premier forum for providing business
leaders with detailed information and cogent analysis on issues critical to manufacturers and other key
business sectors.
As you know, AIV has long been a leader in the key issues facing Vermont's energy future. Vermont is
currently seeing a convergence of several very significant energy policies that pose imminent challenges
for the state and carry serious implications for Vermont's ratepayers. The Legislature, Public Service
Board, Public Service Department, and utilities will make critical decisions in the coming months, and it is
important for Vermont employers to be aware of what is at stake.
In addition to looming "end game" in deciding the fate of Vermont Yankee, decisions on future contracts
with Hydro Quebec are also coming due -- placing two-thirds of Vermont's energy supply in question in
the very near future. At the same time, the debate continues between letting the market or state
mandates drive renewable energy development.
And on top of this, regional, national, and international plans are being developed for transmission
strategies and projects that will not only impact the sources and generation types in Vermont's own
portfolio, but that of the region -- all with cost and construction implications not entirely under Vermont's
control.
To help Vermont business and political leaders understand the options and implications of
these converging issues, AIV's 89th Annual Meeting will feature:
· Presentations from VELCO, Hydro Quebec, Vermont Yankee, and Vermont utilities.
· Panel discussion with key leaders representing the Legislature, Public Service Department,
utilities, power developers, and industrial customers.
· Luncheon address by Governor Douglas.
