WEC’s Landfill Gas to Energy Generating Facility Open House
OPEN HOUSE
WEC’s Landfill Gas to Energy Generating Facility
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4th, 10:00 AM-1:00 PM
NEWSVT Landfill, Airport Rd., Coventry, VT
WEC built the Coventry generating facility in order to provide a long-term stably-priced source of clean energy for our over 10,000 members in Orange, Washington and Caledonia Counties. The plant first began generating in July, 2005 with a capacity of 4.8 megawatts. It was expanded to 6.4 MW in July 2007. This past June, we completed a second expansion, to 8 MW. The Coventry plant is now generating over 70% of all the electricity used by our members, and will continue to be a major source of our supply for many years to come.
The Coventry plant generates renewable baseload energy at economic and predictable long-term costs to WEC. Because of the low long-term energy cost, and because, as the developer, WEC has been selling the Renewable Energy Certificates associated with the output, it has helped stabilize our costs and rates.
Because the facility is on the landfill, it is not generally open to visitors. In addition to our grand opening celebration in 2005, we have held open houses such as this from time to time so that our members, public officials, colleagues, students and area residents can get a tour of the plant and see a renewable energy source in action.
More information about WEC and the Coventry plant can be found on our website (see below). No advance reservations are needed to attend the Open House. However, larger groups are asked to contact Avram Patt at WEC to reserve a time slot for a tour.
