April 17 is Equal Pay Day, which commemorates the fact that nationwide women earn only about 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. The date, designated by the National Committee on Pay Equity, represents how far into 2012 women would have to work, after working all of 2011, to earn what men earned in 2011 alone. Vermont women fare only slightly better, earning roughly 84 cents per dollar earned by men, according to the National Partnership for Women and Families. African American women living in Vermont earn just 76 cents per dollar earned by men.
