Jim Douglas presents 2003 Governor’s Award for Performance Excellence
The Vermont Council for Quality has announced the VA Medical & Regional Office Center (VAM &
ROC) in White River Junction will receive the 2003 Governor’s Award for Performance Excellence.
Governor Douglas will honor the VA at the Vermont Council for Quality Annual Recognition and Award
Ceremony hosted by Norwich University, February 18th. The Governor’s Award for Performance
Excellence recognizes organizations in Vermont that successfully achieve performance excellence within
their management and operation. Award recipients undergo a series of in-depth assessments and
evaluations by Vermont examiners that analyze productivity and organizational performance. The Medical
Center is a 60-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Dartmouth Medical School and the University of
Vermont College of Medicine as well as numerous other nursing and allied health programs. It provides
primary and specialty acute care services to nearly 22,000 Vermont and New Hampshire veterans. The
Vermont Council for Quality is a non-profit that helps Vermont organizations improve performance and
competitiveness.
Vermont Large Farm Dairy Conference to take place in February
The Vermont Large Farm Dairy Conference is scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 19, 2004,
from 8:30 AM- 4:00 PM at the Sheraton Hotel & Conference Center in Burlington.
Guest speakers include Governor Jim Douglas, Dr John Fetrow, Dr. David Reid, Andy Werkhoven,
and Ellen Hankes. Speeches include “Marginality & Effective Business Management,” by Dr Fetrow, and
“Environmental Management Solutions” by Ellen Hankes. There will be a moderated question and answer
session with a panel of speakers from the University of Vermont Extension System and US Department of
Agriculture.
Ski areas team up with maple promotion board to promote Vermont specialty foods
Skiers and snowboarders visiting Vermont ski resorts will get to sample a variety of Vermont specialty
foods, from maple syrup to Cabot cheese to gourmet mustards and cider. The schedule for 2004 includes:
Bromley Mountain on Feb 7th, Killington Resort on Feb 14th, Bolton Valley Resort on Feb 21st,
Smugglers’ Notch Resort on Feb 28th, Middlebury College Snow Bowl on March 6th, Burke Mountain
Ski Areas on March 13th and Stowe Mountain Resort on April 10th.
Registration open for UVM executive education program
Registration is now open for the University of Vermont’s Executive Education Program, offered through
the School of Business Administration. Nineteen business and management workshops are available

Caregiving workshop series offered
The Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association in collaboration with Rutland Regional Medical Center,
the Southwestern Council on Aging, and Interage Adult Day program are providing a series of classes
offered to assist and empower caregivers. The series, The Caregiving Puzzle, will provide strategies for
successful coping as caregivers including developing support systems, managing relationships,
bereavement, as well as technical skills on handling patients safely. For a complete schedule of classes or

Vermont GIS Expo seeks exhibitors
The Vermont Center for Geographic Information, Inc in Waterbury is seeking exhibitors for the eighth
annual Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Exposition. GIS Expo 2004 will be held Thursday, April
8th at the Radisson Hotel in Burlington from 9AM to 3 PM, and will be free and open to the public. The
Expo will allow GIS professionals in the public and private sectors to showcase GIS projects, and will also
provide hardware and software vendors with the opportunity to showcase GIS projects, and will also
provide hardware and software vendors with the opportunity to demonstrate new products and services.
Attendees will include GIS professionals from New England and New York, town officials, legislators,
business people, and the general public interested in learning more about the potential of GIS. For more

Franklin region career expo to take place in March
The 6th Annual Franklin Region Career/Job Expo will take place on Thursday, March 25th at the
Collins-Perley Sports & Fitness Center in St Albans. Businesses seeking to participate are currently
being sought. Students from Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille and Chittenden counties will be attending, over
800 overall. The event is also open to the public and in the past has averaged over 100 walk-ins per hour.

Flynn Center offers winter jazz series
The MainStage winter jazz series at the Flynn Center of Performing Arts in Burlington culminates on
Friday, February 13 at 8 PM with Boston’s Either/Orchestra. The group will also perform as part of the
Student Matinee Series on Friday, Feb 13th at 11 AM and a free meet-the-artists discussion happens on
Friday, Feb 13th at 6:30 PM in the Amy E Tarrant Gallery at the Flynn. In addition, a jazz workshop with
members of Either/Orchestra will take place Thursday, Feb 12th at 7 PM.
